SCONE jazz musician and football fan, Stuart St Hill is getting ready to dust off his trumpet and perform in front of 27 000 people with his band later this month.
Mr St Hill and his Newcastle based band Fish Fry, are preparing to play at Energy Australia stadium for the Knights home game against the Cowboys on Saturday, August 23.
Hoping to help the NRL team’s support group, the Knights Crusaders, lift the atmosphere in the stadium, Mr St Hill has played his trumpet while in the stands at the last two home games.
“It seems to be working really well,” he said.
“My focus has been about getting in there and getting the crowd going.”
The Knights won both games which were against the Rabbitohs and Parramatta.
Mr St Hill said Fish Fry initially contacted the Knights as they have a song called ‘Night Train,’ on their latest album, ‘Platter’. The band realised they could rework it to be ‘Knight’s train,’ after seeing former Knight’s player Andrew John’s at a wedding.
‘Knight’s Train’ will be reworked as a single to be released next year and it will be sold as a fundraiser for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter who the Knight’s sponsor.
Fish Fry usually play a mixture of jazz, funk, R&B and jive music which although a little left field for the football goes down well with both adults and children who find themselves clapping along.
“It’s good party music,” Mr St Hill said.
He said the CEOs saw Fish Fry play at the team’s 21st Birthday bash at Wests and afterwards asked them to play live at a home game.
“They liked what they saw and asked us to come.”
Fish Fry have performed at a number of corporate and Hunter Valley gigs including Jazz in the Vines. But Mr St Hill said this will be the first time they have played in front of 27 000 people.
Fish Fry will play on the field before kick off.
