Trumpet Boy & the Newcastle Knights

Going hard and keeping my head down this year with the Knights Crusade in 2009!!

Phantom Bugler Loose - Newcastle Morning Herald (Sidelines - Mon 1/9/08)

WHO'S on the bugle? That was the question going around Energy Australia Stadium on Saturday night as a phantom trumpeter burst into life with every Knight's surge. Many thought it added to the occasion, but were thankful they weren't sitting next to him.

In tune for Knights game - (The Scone Advocate / Fairfax Digital 20/8/08)

SCONE jazz musician and football fan, Stuart St Hill is getting ready to dust off his trumpet and perform in front of 27 000 people with his band later this month.

Mr St Hill and his Newcastle based band Fish Fry, are preparing to play at Energy Australia stadium for the Knights home game against the Cowboys on Saturday, August 23.

Hoping to help the NRL team’s support group, the Knights Crusaders, lift the atmosphere in the stadium, Mr St Hill has played his trumpet while in the stands at the last two home games.

“It seems to be working really well,” he said.

“My focus has been about getting in there and getting the crowd going.”

The Knights won both games which were against the Rabbitohs and Parramatta.

Mr St Hill said Fish Fry initially contacted the Knights as they have a song called ‘Night Train,’ on their latest album, ‘Platter’. The band realised they could rework it to be ‘Knight’s train,’ after seeing former Knight’s player Andrew John’s at a wedding.

‘Knight’s Train’ will be reworked as a single to be released next year and it will be sold as a fundraiser for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter who the Knight’s sponsor.

Fish Fry usually play a mixture of jazz, funk, R&B and jive music which although a little left field for the football goes down well with both adults and children who find themselves clapping along.

“It’s good party music,” Mr St Hill said.

He said the CEOs saw Fish Fry play at the team’s 21st Birthday bash at Wests and afterwards asked them to play live at a home game.

“They liked what they saw and asked us to come.”

Fish Fry have performed at a number of corporate and Hunter Valley gigs including Jazz in the Vines. But Mr St Hill said this will be the first time they have played in front of 27 000 people.

Fish Fry will play on the field before kick off.

Trumpet Boy Evicted During Knights - Broncos Clash at Suncorp (Sun 7 Sept 2008)

TRUMPET BOY found himself being escorted by security guards from the stands at Suncorp Stadium
last Friday night, his trumpet confiscated and threatened with being charged for "inciting a riot".

Questions were being asked in the media last week about just who was the phantom trumpeter after a sensational performance with the Knights Crusade in the Andrew Johns Stand and clearly audible throughout Fox TV coverage of the game when the Knights narrowly beat Melbourne at home.

"I've been playing in the stands since the Knights beat Penrith and have had a 100% win record. The only game the boys have lost was away against Canberra, a game I was unable to attend."

"Someone needs to get me up there to help get the boys over the line against the Broncos", he pleaded last week on local
Newcastle radio station NX-FM after they had put the call out and revealed that
Trumpet Boy was indeed Fish Fry trumpeter Stu St Hill.  Stu was recently recruited by the Knights Crusade to help build atmosphere at home games after flailing attendances and poor crowd involvement.

NX-FM organized Trumpet Boy and his partner flights up with Jetstar, accommodation in a Best Western motel and tickets into the game. They managed to talk their way through the gate with a black backpack and a James Morrison signature trumpet.

"But in the eighth minute after just two "Charge" calls and one "Waa Waa Waa" following a Broncos mistake, everything went pear shaped  when a sideline security guard spotted me and called it in.  Soon after two rather large security guards came down the stairs and much to the dislike of the surrounding Knights and Broncos fans alike, I was asked to leave. As they escorted me from the stands I raised my trumpet and the crowd erupted booing the guards for taking me away", said a shaken St Hill.

He was taken to a cloak room where his trumpet was confiscated and after his identity was established he was told by security he could be removed from the stadium and charged with "inciting a riot" because he had raised his trumpet to the crowd to evoke a reaction.

"It was really disappointing after all the effort that went into getting me there and I take some responsibility for the Knights loss - I just know I could have made a difference if I had been allowed to do my thing", said a shattered St Hill.

Mr St Hill was however allowed to return to watch the second half  and his trumpet was returned at the end of the game. Newcastle Knights needed to win that game to make it into the finals but now find their season over after the Warriors beat the Eels last night to leapfrog the Knights into eighth spot.

"I'll be back next year to help lead the Knights Crusade bigger louder and more passionate than ever!" vowed Mr St Hill.
