My move from Scone to Hallidays Point this year provided me with an unexpected but terrific opportunity to work with some fantastic students and wonderful staff at Great Lakes College. I played trumpet along side my son Sam (on tenor sax) in the backing band for 'Back to the 80s - The Totally Awesome Musical' performing 4 shows over 3 days - 25, 26 & 27 June 2009.

IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE BLAST!

Review - Great Lakes Advocate Wednesday July 1 2009

Fluorescent shirts, lace stockings and teased hair are suddenly cool again. Or at least they are at Great Lakes College.

Students and teachers involved in the Back to the 80s 'totally awesome musical', staged on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, should take a bow.

It was hard to sit still and not join in on the singing and dancing to tunes like Lets Hear It From The Boy, Walking On Sunshine and Footloose. For the remainder of the weekend my head was filled with 80's classics - and that wasn't a bad thing.

But what also stayed with me, long after the final curtain came down, was the obvious dedication of the students to the production and the camaraderie it developed. They were proud. They were committed. And they were very entertaining.

Errol Sweeney as Feargal McFerrin stole the hearts of the audience with his unique dance moves, while 'too cool for school' Kerrie Sydee was commanding in her performance as Cyndi Gibson. Kieran Hennessey, as Michael Feldman, pulled facial expressions that were worthy of a bad TV sitcom - and fitted in perfectly with going Back to the 80s. His musical numbers were energetic and animated.

But the moments that stirred the emotions, and raised the goosebumps, were the Michael Jackson numbers, Man in the Mirror and We are the World. Students dedicated the first song in Act 2 to the pop icon, who died on Thursday. It was poignant and scarily eerie.

Letter To The Editor
Great Lakes Advocate published Wednesday July 1 2009

I would like to offer my most sincere congratulations to Great Lakes College for the fantastic production of “Back to the 80’s”.  The musical was strongly supported by the community playing to packed houses and standing ovations over the three nights it was staged last week.

An awful lot of work goes into these productions and a great deal of time and effort is put in outside school hours.  It is a credit to the dedication, passion and professionalism of the staff and students and also to the commitment of the school executive.

I know this first hand as I had the privilege of playing trumpet in the totally awesome “Back to the 80’s” band and working with the young musicians, cast and staff over the last few months.

There is a wonderful spirit and camaraderie that develops out of these exercises particularly with the kids and it is something all involved will remember for a lifetime.

Our family moved to this beautiful place from Scone in the Upper Hunter at the beginning of this year, uprooting our children from their schools and friends - a decision not taken lightly.

My children attend Great Lakes College. Our decision to move has been vindicated.
